The World We Live In
Fascinations, Fears, and Faith
We live in a rapidly changing world — one filled with innovation, shifting values, and new definitions of truth that constantly challenge how we think and lead our families. As Christian men, our calling is not to retreat from the world, but to engage it with wisdom, courage, and discernment, helping our families navigate it without losing sight of God’s Word. In times of confusion and change, we stand firm knowing that while everything around us may shift, God’s truth remains unshakable.
Key Scripture: 1 Chronicles 12:32a
“And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do...”
Other Scripture: Romans 12:2; Matthew 24:35
Exhortation
We live in an extraordinary yet unsettling time. From artificial intelligence and digital advancement to global conversations on inclusivity, freedom, morality, and truth — our world is moving fast and changing deeply. These changes affect not just how we work, think, and communicate, but also how we lead our homes and raise our children.
As Christian men, we cannot deny that this new world fascinates and challenges us at the same time. We marvel at the potential of technology, the speed of innovation, and the ease of global connection that would have been unimaginable only a generation ago. The rise of awareness about justice, equality, and the value of every life reflects something of God’s heart for humanity. Yet, we also sense the subtle dangers — when good intentions become detached from divine truth, and when progress moves faster than the moral compass that should guide it.
Every day, our families are exposed to competing narratives — the world redefining success, identity, and even faith itself. The screen in every home now preaches its own gospel: “Do what feels right.” “Truth is personal.” “You don’t need boundaries.” The digital space has become both a teacher and a trap. It offers knowledge but breeds confusion; connection but fuels loneliness; entertainment but distracts from purpose. Our children are growing up in a generation where conviction is seen as intolerance, and faith in God as outdated.
So how do we lead wisely in such a world — a world that seems to applaud everything except steadfastness? We start by doing what the men of Issachar did: understanding the times and discerning what God calls us to do within them (1 Chronicles 12:32). This means observing the world not with fear or frustration, but with spiritual insight — recognising where God is still at work, and where the enemy seeks to deceive. We must guide our families not by reacting to change, but by responding with truth, love, and discernment. Our role is to help them engage the world without being consumed by it — to use technology without losing wonder, to appreciate progress without abandoning principle, and to stand firm in a culture of shifting sands.
And in all these things, Scripture remains our compass. “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). We are called not to retreat, but to renew — to lead with calm wisdom in an anxious world. As we do, we shine as “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation” (Philippians 2:15). Jesus reminded His disciples that when they see troubling signs in the world, “do not be alarmed… these things must happen” (Mark 13:7, Matthew 24:6), but He also urged them to “stand firm, and you will win life” (Luke 21:19). The world will keep changing, but God’s Word will not (Matthew 24:35). So, we lead with courage, not complaint; with discernment, not despair; and with the confidence that even in uncertain times, His truth remains the firm foundation for every family that builds upon it.
In light of how fast the world is changing — in technology, morality, and belief — what fascinates you most, and what concerns you most as a Christian man? How do you think we can prepare our families to live with wisdom, not fear, in such a world?
Take time this week to talk with your family about the changes happening in the world — from technology to social values — and explore together what God’s Word says about truth, integrity, and faithfulness. Lead the conversation with calmness and confidence, modelling discernment and trust in God’s unchanging Word.
Lord, give me understanding like the men of Issachar — to discern the times and lead my family with wisdom and peace. Help me not to fear change, but to stay rooted in Your truth and guided by Your Spirit, in Jesus' name, Amen.
