The Power of Wise Counsel

Seeking Godly Guidance

No man walks this journey of faith alone—God designed us for accountability, support, and wisdom gained through godly counsel. Christian men must intentionally seek godly counsel, build brotherhood with those who sharpen them, and be willing to offer wisdom to others when called. However, they must ensure counsel aligns with Scripture rather than emotions.

Key Scripture: Proverbs 11:14

“Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.”

Other Scripture: Proverbs 27:17

  • Why is godly counsel essential in the life of a Christian man?

  • How can we actively seek wisdom while avoiding isolation and self-reliance?

  • What steps can we take to surround ourselves with strong, faith-filled influences who sharpen us?

Evaluate the voices influencing your life. Identify areas where counsel is lacking or where worldly advice has taken precedence over biblical wisdom. This week, seek to strengthen relationships with those who encourage godly decision-making, accountability, and spiritual growth.

Lord, You have called us to walk in wisdom, not in isolation. Help us to seek and embrace godly counsel in every area of our lives. Surround us with people who sharpen us, encourage our faith, and guide us in truth. Give us humility to receive correction and discernment to recognise wisdom from You. May our choices reflect Your will and bring honour to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Exhortation

No man walks this journey of faith alone—God designed us for accountability, support, and wisdom gained through godly counsel. In a world that celebrates self-reliance, Scripture reminds us that wise men seek guidance, while the fool isolates himself. Proverbs 11:14 declares, “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.” A godly man understands the importance of surrounding himself with those who share biblical wisdom, whether through trusted friends, seasoned leaders, or those with spiritual insight.

The Bible offers powerful examples of men strengthened by wise counsel. Moses, though a great leader, was overwhelmed by responsibility until Jethro, his father-in-law, taught him how to delegate wisely (Exodus 18:17-24). David had Nathan—a prophet who corrected him when he strayed (2 Samuel 12:7-13). Even Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, benefited from the encouragement and guidance of Barnabas (Acts 9:27). God places wise counsellors in the lives of Christian men to sharpen their discernment, strengthen their faith, and challenge them to walk in righteousness.

The voices we heed can either build us up or lead to ruin. Solomon, despite being blessed with divine wisdom, fell because he surrounded himself with ungodly influences rather than listening to God’s instruction (1 Kings 11:1-11). His heart turned from the Lord due to the counsel of his many wives, leading to idolatry and the eventual downfall of his kingdom. Similarly, Rehoboam, his son, rejected the wisdom of the elders and instead followed the reckless advice of his peers, which resulted in the division of Israel (1 Kings 12:6-11). Another tragic example is King Ahab, who listened to Jezebel’s ungodly counsel, leading him into deep corruption and destruction (1 Kings 21:25).

Many men avoid seeking counsel out of pride or fear, thinking they must handle life alone. However, Scripture warns against this mindset. Proverbs 18:1 states, “Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.” Seeking godly advice is not weakness—it is strength, as it reflects humility, wisdom, and a teachable spirit. A man who surrounds himself with strong, godly influences builds a home, marriage, and legacy that reflect God’s truth.

Christian men must intentionally seek godly counsel, build brotherhood with those who sharpen them, and be willing to offer wisdom to others when called. Proverbs 27:17 proclaims, “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.” When men walk in wisdom, accountability, and biblical counsel, they strengthen their families, churches, and the next generation. A man who listens to wise instruction becomes a pillar in his home, ensuring that his household follows the path of righteousness. However, the pursuit of wisdom requires humility, the willingness to reject ungodly advice, and the discipline to pray before making decisions, ensuring counsel aligns with Scripture rather than emotions.
